The Exterior

  • Exterior

The exterior is best described as two juxtaposed, and some could say, opposing, oblongs laid down as a cruciform upon the land. The lightly constructed, glass and timber, single storied living pavilion to the north, is almost oriental in appearance, being transparent across its width to the outdoor living area beyond.

However, this delicacy is grounded by the solidity of its dark stained sliding shutters and massive column-like uprights which link visually to the columns alongside the adjoining boardwalk. Concealed guttering gives the zinc clad roof an almost blunt profile, despite its grace, and it is this bluntness, as much as the strength implied by the size of the columns which links this light and airy space to the solidity of the main house set at right angles beside it.

This forceful structure is monumentally two story; a powerful statement whose exterior walls are textured by the vertical band-sawn shuttering into which the concrete was poured. However, the resisting forms of these two disparate forms are thematically linked by the detailing provided by the repeating motif of dark stained grids of external shutters and the monumental iron bark columns.

It is a powerful design, one that challenges and commands the viewer´s involvement.
